Your Monthly Dose of Flamenco
This newsletter is the very first of many more to come. Through these flamenco letters, I will share teachings about the art of flamenco on the last Friday of each month, and always in three parts:
1) Teachings about flamenco history, culture, geography, styles & more
2) Practical lessons and tips for flamenco dancers
3) Info about upcoming events, classes, performances, workshops & the like
It has been a challenging year for so many, but one with silver linings. One of the silver linings in my own life has been the opportunity to connect with my teachers in Spain online AND to open my own Online Flamenco Studio through which I have been able to connect with new flamenco students and enthusiasts from all over the US & the world. To give back to our wonderful community of flamenco lovers, this newsletter will, poco a poco, teach its readers about flamenco in regular, monthly doses.
I hope you enjoy!
With Love & In Gratitude,
Lindsey
Part One | Flamenco History
In order to understand the emotive quality and stylistic complexity of flamenco, it is essential to understand its history. Here you will find a brief overview of flamenco's rich history and the development of its many styles.
Read: The Art of Flamenco, A Brief History
To further develop your understanding of flamenco's cultural and historical foundation, I highly recommend watching the film Latcho Drom (Safe Journey) by Tony Gatlif. This film celebrates the musical and cultural diversity of Romani people from diverse countries while documenting the journey of the Roma from India to Spain and the many musical and cultural influences that the Spanish Roma have contributed to flamenco. This film also underscores the historical and current oppression faced by Romani people across the globe, including the Roma of Spain, highlighting how this experience of oppression and persecution has informed the emotive expressions within flamenco as an art form and culture.
Part Two | Flamenco Dance Lesson
A Guided Braceo Improvisation
This lesson allows students to be guided through 4 styles of flamenco - Alegrías, Tangos, Taranta & Guajira - to allow students to put their braceo technique (arm work) into context. The arm and hand movements used for this improvisation are ones that members can and have learned in the Online Flamenco Studio.
I wanted to share this lesson with our larger community to allow those who are curious about learning flamenco to move through some music with me, and also to get a feel for the work we are doing together online. My goal as a flamenco teacher is always to gently encourage you to find the confidence to embody your learning and to give yourselves permission to find your voice as dancers. Improvising, using whatever knowledge and skills you have at any given moment, is a great way to hone your artistic voice ❤️️ Enjoy & Happy Dancing!
